Exercise is a Stress-Buster!

At one time or another, we all experience stress. When you’re faced with unpleasant or tense situations, your body activates cortisol and adrenaline, hormones that increase your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing capacity. You may feel irritable and jittery as your body ramps for “fight or flight”.

Chronic stress can lead to headaches, stomach troubles, high blood pressure, and insomnia — and that’s why it’s so important to figure out what works best to help you manage it. While circumstances often dictate what happens, learning relaxation techniques, getting support when needed, and establishing a fitness routine are your best lines of defense.

The American Heart Association reminds us that exercise has numerous health benefits, but especially when it comes to managing stress. Here are a few ideas to help you get moving.

Find What You Love and Stick With It

Do you love to walk or run? Dance? Play racquetball? There are plenty of options at our Pittsburgh gym to help you get rid of pent up energy.

Cardio exercise on our treadmills, bikes,  and ellipticals is a great way to increase your fitness level as you decrease stress. Or get your blood flowing and release endorphins with a group exercise class like Zumba. It’s fun and fast, and you’ll be surrounded by positive group energy!

Don’t feel like mixing with a large group? We have small group training options, too, which means you’ll still experience group energy and the attention from the instructor, but with limited class sizes.

Don’t give up, not even on the tough days. Take command of your health and  your confidence will soar! Just a word of caution, though. Don’t overdo it; start slowly, if needed, and set goals you know you’ll be able to achieve. You can do it!

Carve out time on your schedule, pencil it in. Alexander’s Athletic Club is open 24 hours, so you can workout whenever it’s most convenient. No excuses!
